ALEX NYERGES December 1 - December 23, 2017 opening reception, Friday, December 1, 2017 6:00-8:00
For Immediate Release
Alex Nyerges will never give up the chase!
Chasing the Light II picks up right where the 1st one left off and benefits Alex’s favorite charity the VMFA.
Alex Nyerges is well known as The Director of The Virginia Museum of Fine Arts; an energized man whose vision and leadership has taken the museum to its greatest heights. That passion is bolstered by a daily ritual of running at daybreak with his trusty Cannon by his side. Alex loves to capture the glorious morning light and shadows it casts no matter whether he is in hometown or half a world away. Nyerges has been shooting for decades. He comes from a family full of musicians and photographers, but it wasn’t until 2015 and his first solo exhibit with glave kocen that he revealed almost forty images culled from his massive body of work. Not to say it was the first time Nyerges had shown his photography. Alex had submitted to exhibitions and competitions nationally and internationally and was met with great success validating his wife Kathryn’s encouragement to show more of his work that he had kept mostly to himself, family, and friends.
“Chasing the Light II” is really a perfect title for this new collection of work. One photo in this new exhibit was taken one month after the first “Chasing the Light” exhibit closed! The majority of images for this installment were captured in 2016 and a few even in 2017. Nyerges,a very accomplished author, will compose heartfelt insights for each piece making you feel like you were standing right next to him when he got the shot. “Chasing the Light II” also continues the thread of Alex’s travelogue taking us from RVA to California, Europe, Cuba, China, Australia, and beyond.
Of course no good sequel, emphasis on good, would just rest on the success of its predecessor and “Chasing the Light II” delivers two shifts in Alex’s work. More color photos are on display this time around even though Nyerges still, “Sees the world in black & white.” His eye for abstract shines with bold color in “Havana Pool” and finds quiet contemplative color in “The Thames.” Also a new acrylic presentation for works like “Tarpon Springs Fog” makes for a visceral viewing experience coupled with Alex’s already dialed in command of contrast. About ten of the forty plus works will be treated with the acrylic presentation including four works from his “Waterwall” series that took the 2017 Current Art Fair by storm.
Chasing the light is about as accurate as you can describe what makes Alex and many photographers tick. Capturing magic moments is a never ending chase. Patience and spontaneity intersect while light and shadow dance fleetingly and then …CLICK! The moment is captured forever and lives on as a memory that never fades. It is this sentiment that drives Alex to seek beauty all the world over and he finds it. Whether it be in majestic scale and form like “Norfolk Hull” or in the humanity of the perfectly timed, “Look Left, Look Right,” He finds the light. As a matter of fact word on the street is as of press time he’s still on the hunt.
The Chase begins once again December 1st and runs through the 23rd. Proceeds of this exhibit go to benefit Alex’s favorite charity the VMFA and their great educational programs, special exhibitions and statewide services that the museum offers 365 days a year.
