It was in Carolina. It was a place to get quiet, get out of the way and tune in.They called it “The Pond.” Steve Bassett would meet his friends their off and on for many years. Daytime activities could be spent in quiet contemplation, group exercise or outdoor projects whereas the evening would be filled with strolling through the woods through a combo of rope courses, landings, and walkways. This routine instilled peace and harmony in Steve’s heart that he continues to draw on to this day.
BJ Kocen reached out to Bassett after reading about this experience in Steve’s memoir, “Sing LOUD.” Kocen found the book inspirational and proposed they get together and write a tune about the pond as they had a blast collaborating a few months prior when they wrote and demoed the song “Own Where You’re At (The Cows Don’t Care) in one session.
That writing session in March of 2016 began a journey neither Steve nor BJ could have predicted. “We were writing, recording, communing and giggling. We became more than pals, we became brothers.” says Kocen. One song turned into one song after another and it didn’t take long to realize the newly formed duo were on their way to creating a concept album. Bassett often says about the collection "Anything Goes so Everything went” and it’s true with influences as widely flung from Depeche Mode to The Moody Blues.
Almost every song has the word heart in it. “As we wrote, we connected with our beautiful setting and eventually felt like we were communing at,” The Pond” continues BJ. “We invented stories for Pond Critters some of which made its way on to the recording. We brought in bits of our own history as well and folded it all in the work.’
It's unlike anything either Bassett or Kocen has put out previously. They almost cheekily dubbed the project the “Kocen/Bassett Experience.” They thought about so many different unique ways to release the music into the world but the answer was ultimately staring them in the face. They invited artists to create interpretations of the music so The Glave Kocen Gallery could host an exhibit to coincide with the release. Many Glave Kocen and other area favorites said yes to participating and the guideline was simple; However the music inspires you go for it. Some Artists like Noah Scalin went directly for the flavor of the P-funked tinged, “Dunk Tank” while Steven Walker opted for the Coastal Country tune ,”Weather and The Whim.” Other artists like Eli McMullen, Mary Vanlandingham, Linda Hollett-Bazouzi are taking a less direct approach and are focusing their work on the general vibe or notions the songs relay.
The complete list of participating artists are;

Bassett and Kocen will perform selected cuts from, “The Pond” and take questions on December 15th at 11:30 AM at the Glave Kocen Gallery. At this time no further CD release concerts have been planned. The music will be playing in the Glave Kocen Gallery as the soundtrack to the exhibit for the entire run from December 7th to December 24th. No Christmas music you may ask!? Well the music certainly is all about gratitude, giving and spreading love and compassion. It might actually be perfect welcome to the holidays.
“The Pond” CD will be available at the gallery only for now and will be released more widely in 2019.
